The Maude (Ruark) Doyal family of Vigo Co., IN

Ivy Maude Ruark (1887IN-1949IN) (bottom row, center) - md William Henry Doyal

The family's last name was Doyal, until some of Bill's brothers and sisters changed it to the more common "Doyle" spelling sometime shortly after World War 2. Most of the records I can find on Bill's ancestors use the "Doyal" spelling, and it is unknown why it was later "corrected". Most of Bill's children changed their last names, too, except for Bill Jr.. He and his descendants continue to use the original "Doyal".

This family moved around a lot, so it's difficult to classify it by county. William and Maude were married in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. Around 1913 they moved to Lawrenceville, Lawrence County, Illinois. By 1918 they had relocated in Hardinsville, Crawford County, Illinois, which had been the home of the Doyal family for generations. In 1921 Opal was born in Oblong, also in Crawford County. By 1922, William and Maude had moved back to Vigo County, and were living in the town of Pimento. By 1926 they had moved to Hammond, Lake County, Indiana, and their last two children were born in Hammond.

Top row: Maude, Bill, and Beulah
Bottom row: Frances (hamming it up!) and Betty, in the shadow.
