Thomas Jefferson Ruark was born in Marion County Indiana, the son of Thomas and Rachel (Hays) Ruark. He moved with them to Putnam County Indiana in 1861, where he remained.

They had been married for 6 years, and Mary had only one child living, out of three born. This must have been a very difficult time for the family.
